Solarez® Acrylic SURFACING AGENT is an additive for UV-Cure and MEKP-Cure resins that will eliminate “surface tack”
Function:
The surfacing agent from long ago had always been Paraffin Wax melted into a solution of Styrene Monomer. You would add about 2% of this solution to your resin in order to make a “Hot Coat”. - a coat of resin to put on top of your finished lamination resin that would cure dry to facilitate sanding without gumming up your sanding pad. One would be justified in asking “Why not just use laminating resin with Paraffin added?” The reason is because the wax would interfere with the inter-laminar bonding of the fiberglass layers.
So, Surfacing Agent is added to the “Hot Coat” in order to cure dry the final layer before sanding to facilitate even sanding
Why is Solarez Acrylic Surfacing Agent better than Paraffin Wax? Because in order to dissolve the Paraffin, you require a fair amount of Styrene. Styrene is the culprit that makes resin yellow with age and reduces surface hardness detracting from gloss. Styrene is also flammable, stinky, carcinogenic, and in general, considered a “Hazardous” material.
On the other hand, Solarez® Acrylic Surfacing Agent accomplishes the same goal of curing the resin bone dry, but it does so without the addition of Styrene. It also reduces resin odor instead of increasing it.
